Presidential Gold Medal Award
The Indian Science Congress Association presented noted social scientist Virendar M. Trehan the "Presidential Gold Medal Award" at the inaugural ceremony of the 95th Indian Science Congress being held at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam on 3rd January 2008. Mr. Trehan was bestowed with this honour for his significant and lifetime contribution to the development of Science and Technology in the country. The Award was presented by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India during the inaugural ceremony. Virendar Mohan Trehan, 64, a well known social scientist and Chairman of the New Delhi headquartered Mekaster Group, is the only social scientist selected for the award. About 2500 scientists, delegates, researchers including several Nobel laurets from abroad attended the function. The Indian Science Congress brings together scientists both from India and abroad for mutual interaction in the cause of scientific advancement and to promote development.
Commenting on the award conferred on him Mr. Trehan said, "This is the first time that I have been encouraged on a national platform by the oldest autonomous body of our country, which is recognized and highly regarded by the Scientific Community and by the Government of India. I take this as a prestigious moment in my life and pledge to continue devoting my full might towards the cause of Scientific Development and Social Integration in our Nation."
Mr. Trehan said that the award is a recognition for the things he did for fostering Science & Technology in India, with an emphasis on the benefit to man and society and to alleviate the scientific temper. He said that the award will further propel him into doing more for the benefit of the society.
